The modern Grand Cherokee has a spare wheel
that lies down in the back just like the range rovers but some of the Cherokees
required a different approach fitting combo or split tank assembly in the area
that the petrol tank used to take up
The operation starts with the petrol tank being removed this is often quite
difficult as the 2 bolts that secure the tank to the vehicle are usually
corroded. The plastic tank is held in using 2 straps that will be discarded
after the conversion.
The petrol pump is then removed and fitted to the new purpose made steel petrol
tank, the LPG tank is assembled and the fitted to the petrol tank using the
cradle and the 3 straps and last but not lest the whole combo unit is lifted up
and secured using 3 bolts either side of the tank assembly and are bolted using
new bolts into the same holes as the tow hitch would or is using. A much better
and more secure fixing than bolting the tank through the floor of the vehicle.
Finally the whole assembly is protected with a large skid plate that protects
both tanks from road debris and the occasional impact from going off road
The filler (LPG filling connection) is usually mounted in the near side rear
panel as shown on the right.
