Gas Power UK have always prided themselves on being able to
undertake work that many other installers have refused to consider or which have
been rejected as 'impossible'.The Ford
Scorpio is owned by the Webmaster of the Club Web Site -
www.fordscorpio.co.uk and is a 1995
vehicle fitted with the 208bhp Cosworth 2.9 Litre 24V V6. With 115,000 miles
under it's belt it has nevertheless been well maintained and this is one of the
secrets of a good conversion - well maintained vehicles need not worry about
having a high mileage.
Already having been fitted with 17" aftermarket Alloys, it was
deemed that the spare wheel bay could be used for a 55 litre Torroidal tank.
Given the existing engines prodigious power output it was felt that twin
vapourisers would ensure that enough gas was available throughout the rev range
and these fed 6 injectors installed just above the inlet valves.
The 24V Cosworth engine has a very complicated inlet
manifold system which uses a butterfly valve to alter it's characteristics above
3200 rpm. Whilst others have installed the cheaper Mixer systems they have
encountered tuning problems and more than one has destroyed his inlet system
through backfiring. With over 6 feet of manifold filled with explosive LPG and
Air, the slightest spark can cause the older Mixer system to destroy the plastic
boxes and tubing as well as the expensive air flow sensor.
The Sequential Vapour Injection system does not suffer
such problems as the gas is injected at the valve and the inlet manifolds carry
only fresh air.
Time from start to finish was just 5 days and the total
cost was £1650+vat.
Latest report - 4/11/2004
The Scorpio has now covered 135,000 miles and has not
suffered a single problem whilst using LPG. It averages 26 mpg on a run and
20mpg around town which compares well to what it did on petrol.
Latest report - 13/5/2007
The car is still going strong and running perfectly on
LPG. The only faults to date were a leaking vacuum pipe (perished and
original) and an injector that picked up some dirt. With petrol getting
close to £1 a litre, the
system has paid for itself already!
